The Cerebral Symphony by Faenon

Brad, a jock, trips one day (at a party, we can only assume), accidentally plunging himself into the hallucinatory world of The Cerebral Symphony where he meets a guy called Ivan, who you might wonder is a human metaphor for repressed teenage angst.

Join the schizophrenic, multiple-personality-disorder afflicted Ivan, whose destiny (and personalities) you can steer through his individual choices as he bumbles his way through his life as a renegade thief into a big war between the underground cyborg Mafia, the omnipresent, all-seeing Corporation and the corrupt, power-crazed Government over the six elemental stones that, when gathered together, bestow ULTIMATE POWER on their holder.

On the way you will meet Liz the ADHD werewolf, Jean the insomniac minstrel, Catherine the telepath with a firey temper, Carys the delusional young stage actress, Robert the narcoleptic doctor, Zak the homeostatically-imbalanced fighter-pilot, and Bain the accident prone Gladiator. You will decide whether in the final estimation it is Ivan's more "upbeat" or his "darker" pesonality that will win control of his mind as they battle with his more balanced, "pensive" side.

The Cerebral Symphony is a bizarre rpg by Faenon: with a strange cyberpunk world where three powers are competing to control the masses and a bizarre cast of character, the game offers an epic series of adventures. Game combines some classic battles and exploration to puzzles, survival and stealth sections.
The main aspect is that the protagonist, Ivan, has a multiple personality disorder, and in many scenes it will be possible to choose his response to certain events.

Random Fact: at a certain point of the game the player may be able to create an alter ego to enter the game and assist Ivan and friends. Really.

Final Verdict: a pretty enjoyable game, a little rough around the edges, but complete and fun.

Emera trilogy by Sugiyan すぎやん (japanese)

Emera.1 - Rest in Peace - Project Mother, which entrusted local administration to advanced artificial intelligence, has been scrapped, but the recovery of the developed AI, "Mother Core," is not progressing at all. Meanwhile, Ragon Bernhard, an auditor for the World Government, notices a mysterious woman. This woman, carrying a large suitcase, has come to the place to fulfill a promise made in the past…

This is a near-future sci-fi dungeon-crawling RPG. As you progress through the levels, the atmosphere and stage mechanics change, and you will face over 10 bosses, including a hidden boss. There are branching endings and several hidden elements. You can also freely build and strengthen the protagonist's combat style to a certain extent. The estimated playtime is 3-5 hours for the original version, 3-7 for the reboot version. The reboot is a significant upgrade in graphics, scenario, and system compared to this work.

The reboot was  the winner of the 11th Freem! Game Contest for "Commendable Effort Award"

Emera.2 - Odds and Ends - The old world, which boasted an outstanding scientific civilization, perished long ago—an era where magic and mystery thrive, and legends of dragons are told.  In a world that celebrates the earth and respects the mana of nature…
This city was an anomaly, emitting an eerie glow of inorganic matter and high-tech.

This RPG unfolds from multiple perspectives within a single city.  This work consists of multiple chapters, with characters and settings changing in each of them.

This game is different from the previous because it's a series of scenarios with multiple protagonists: here the focus is on the story, although main characters can improve their skills and stats by spending experience points gained through combat. Encounters happen on touch with wandering enemies, but there are also the usual mandatory boss fights. The playtime is approximately 10-16 hours.

Awarded the Silver Prize in the RPG Category at the 12th Freegame Contest.

Misia, a direct descendant of the old royal family, is tired of living a life that is all about studying. He took the "rusty treasured sword'' and planned to run away from home. He is easily brought back, but an incident occurs soon after...

This is a complete fantasy classic rpg with a main hero, unlike the previous title that was more focused on story of different characters. During your journey, you will make friends and you will be able to form a party. Please note that there is no so-called field map in this work. Like in the previous entries battles are initiated touching wandering enemies, aside from the obligatory boss battles. There are several locations and characters returning from the second games, anyway it's a stand alone adventure. The play time is about 15-20 hours.

Received the "RPG Special Award'' for the 10th Freeme contest.

Final Verdict: the Emera trilogy is an excellent series that started from a small game and then became a whole series creating a series of adventures that may be played independently, although playing the whole series is far more enjoyable due to the return of some characters, heroes become npcs and npcs become heroes. The system is kept consistent during the whole series, all encounters are fought against avoidable enemies or mandatory battles that are often boss fights, the fame uses the classic Rpgmaker 2000 battle system, but he aestetics are enriched by the many edits and custom art that's especially evident in the reboot of the first game. Overall this is for me one of the best classic japanese rpg series, particularly memorable also for its peculiar cyberpunk/techno-fantasy setting.

I Want to Bring Her Back to Life but I Don't Know Where to Start by MacBob

Finney wants to bring a woman who is dear to him back to the land of the living but he is unsure on how he is going to go about pulling that off.

Join Finney as he journeys the Lordless Land, a land cursed by a Calamity that revisits every 100 years, looking to cure a woman suffering from an illness that has kept her asleep for years. In his travels, he gathers allies and a share of adversaries as well.
Here is hoping that he might finally bring the woman back to the land of the living by the end of his journey.

I Want to Bring Her Back to Life but I Don't Know Where to Start is probably the game with the longest title I played! And it's also an unique rpg in the sense that it uses a custom made combat system, that's pretty tactical. Moreover the game includes optional subquests and maps that for the most time only extend horizontally: you usually move from left to right or from right to left like in sidescrolling game, however it may happen to find stairs and go up or down, for example.

Random Fact: despite the long title the game project is called simply "Unspun Tale". MacBob this year released another complete project titled "Unspun Tale 2", and the game is called Country of Snow, but aside for a similar fantasy setting (that may or may not be the same world) and a similar combat system, has no relation with this game, but it's a stand alone story. More on that one of the next days.

Final Verdict: besides the combat system, that I found really well done and interesting, I also must stress the beauty of the little animations: characters act, move and express themselves in detail. It's a beautiful little world that comes to life, and also a great story told through several scenes.

Sunset over Imdahl by Teo Mathlein

The story is about Lohn, a young boy who is the sole survivor of the siege of Imdahl. Wandering the streets in desperation, Lohn meets a nobly-dressed man who offers him a chance to bring his hometown back to life. Without knowing his intentions, Lohn accepts on the man's offer, and the game begins.

Sunset Over Imdahl was made in rm2k and utilizes hand-drawn backdrops over tile-based mapping. The game is short, containing only a few hours of gameplay; however, is a completed project of the highest standard. The game is available in English, Spanish and German and consists in a classic linear adventure game with no battles, but includes a couple of minigames.

Random Fact: If you picked up a certain key near the end of the game, you keep it for the next playthrough. This is used to enter the Developer's Room, but if you try to enter the Developer's Room without actually unlocking it properly, the game will detect that the required switches weren't set and freeze you in place while displaying a disturbing image.

Final Verdict: in my opinion Sunset over Imdahl is art, a real masterpiece and a really unique game with incredible aestetics that frame an original and well written story.

Vaporwave Simulator by Unknown

Vaporwave Simulator is a game made in RPG Maker 2003, with its aesthetics jokingly and sincerely based off the vaporwave trend a few years ago. You are "You," and you lost your sunglasses, and you can't be hip with the trends without your sunglasses. Though, there's something more serious in the weirdness if you dig deeper...

Vaporwave Simulator is a surreal Rpgmaker game in which the protagonist has to explore a surreal landscape filled with weird characters to find a pair of sunglasses. The plot is an excuse to a series of bizarre situations and encounters. The graphics are a colorful mix of various edits and rips. The game has no combat nor minigames, it's a sort of walking simulator.

Random Fact: the game was made in 2016 by an unknown developer that wishes to remain anonymous and recovered and hosted by Scitydreamer.

Final Verdict: this a rather unique game from a now defunct site. While not very long or innovative, it has a distinct charms with its unique aestetics and sounds. It's a game worth remembering, since it tries doing something that's not seen often.

Nicolas by Promatheus

You're a space marine partaking in a mission on a distant planet, Nicolas. Normally, industrial missions such as this require little or no military support. Things started to screw up early on though, so no languidity for you.
Just at the moment when you think you took control of the difficulties, they took control over you. You must struggle to survive with your teammates, and carefully reserve your equipment.
If you still hope to reach Earth sometime, of course...

Nicolas is a sort of open-planet rpg adventure: you have to perform a series of mission on the surface of the planet, like reactivated some automated mining facilities, and these can be in any order. There are also some optional quests like obtaining samples for the scientist, anyway the biggest difficulty will be the resources management, since these are scarce. Enemies are mostly weak, but they often outnumber the party members.

Random Fact: the portraits of most characters seems to be edited pictures, maybe of the developer and friends.

Final Verdict: Nicolas is an interesting adventure game where managing the scarce supplies is crucial to survive. The plot and gameplay are both pretty simple and it's pretty much an ok game, I just have liked it more if it was more generous with loot or if battles were shorter, since the atb bar recharges so slowly. Sigh. I know that combat is a big part of the game, but I found it pretty annoying, there aren't lots of abilities or equipments and feels a litte repetitive, but I kept playing to see what was going to happen next. What can I say more? Give it a try!

Island Sky by Ocean

Welcome to the Island of Azulea. It is vacation time, and the students that go to the University in Seaside city are taking a break from the pressures of school. So the best way to enjoy it is to have fun at the beach, right? Usually yes, but not today. For the day of four university students and a teacher are going to get quite interesting...

Island Sky is a linear lighthearted adventure that uses a custom made tactical turn-based combat system.
This is not a complex or revined game, but rather a very interesting experiment and a really peculiar Rpgmaker game.

Random Fact: the game was originally made in 2001, then lost and recovered in 2005. There was the intent to remade it using Rpgmaker XP, but so far the remake, called Azulea, has not been released.

Final Verdict: a really peculiar game, a little rough and not very balanced, but pretty interesting. The aestetic is also pleasing in my opinion.

Tales of the Rhinemaidens by Dreaded

Based on Richard Wagner's "The Ring Cycle" Tales of the Rhinemaidens will span across all four acts of the original opera. This includes "The Rhinegold," "The Valkyrie," "Siegfried," and "Dusk of the Gods."

In the demo we play as Alberich: member of the dwarven race of Nibelungs, Alberich travels to the surface of Midgard in order to search for some way the Nibelungs can garner respect amongst the races of Midgard and to exact revenge on the Aesir whom left his people to rot in the underground world of Nibelheim on Midgard.

The game is a story-driven adventures base on borse mithology that uses an interesting graphic style: facesets are realistic and comes from fantasy games like Baldur's Gate, instead the charsets are Phantasy Star edits (that look more realistic and "dramatic" than the usual rm2k3 charsets) stile battlers are instead sprites that comes from Castlevania. The result, despite the use of resources from different sources is rather sitting and homogeneous, except for some sprites that look ugly and blurry, like the giants.

Tthe game includes some features taken from the classic CRPGs: for example the resting mechanic, but you also have magical items that have to be identified (using magical scrolls that can be bought at the item shops), torches that should be activated in order to see in the darkness (just a hint: BUY them when you can, you can find useful treasures in these dark places!), and so on...

Random Fact: the music you will hear during battles is the Game of Thrones opening theme.

Final Verdict: TOTR is a really strange blend between jrpg and rpg, but there is not character creation, because the story is already established. It's a demo not without some flaws, anyway it's reather enjoyable especially if you like mythology and/or are nostalgic of the old crpgs.

Haeralis - dove termina il mondo by Seraph Andrew (italian)

It is the final battle of a three-year war. A brilliant assault by the kingdom of Ventard manages to open a gap in the endless hordes of zombies. General Lazarus and General Lantis take advantage of this and find themselves at the gates of Ekrian's castle, the evil of the land. In the events that follow, both will find themselves losing their lives. This marks the beginning of our adventure.

You'll find yourself in the shoes of Lazarus, Ventard's general turned zombie. Finding himself unable to die, he will journey to reach his goal: his own end.

Haeralis - dove termina il mondo is a complete short adventure with some interesting features and an intriguing story: in the game we play as an undead general that's immortal, so no Game Over is obtainable by being defeated in combat. Lazarus may also temporarily leave his body and possess little animals. Moreover the game includes a battle system with summonable magic orbs, two minigames, hidden zones and three possible endings.

Random Fact: Haeralis - dove termina il mondo was made for the first short contest of the Rpg2s site. That contest included most of the resources used in this game, like the charsets and enemies, for example, and part of the challenge was using this fantasy package provided. There was also a second short contest that instead was cyberpunk-themed, so the mandatory resources were futuristic, of course.

Final Verdict: an excellent short and complete game with some likeable characters, puzzles, and an original storyline. Well done.

FF: Endless Nova by Delita Hyral X

The game follows the exploits of Deren Star, an odd jobs person who, along with his android companion Motor, is unexpectedly pulled into an adventure to save Hell's Dome, a solar system surrounded by an impenetrable asteroid belt from an artificial supernova. Along the way he meets a number of companions who all end up helping him for some reason or another; Lisbeth, an amnesiac girl with cat ears, a thief named Ibis, a Blue Mage named Ellana, a monk named Fuban, and a walking, talking doll named KioSen, who used to be human.

FF: EN was made in RM2K and focuses on making a fangame that has the spirit of the series without treading on the story of already established game worlds. In fact, that is one of the greatest points about the game - that it creates the feel of a Final Fantasy game without having to use the story and characters of other Final Fantasy games before it.
An interesting detail is that the custom levelling system is taken from Final Fantasy 2, where what you did in battle determined your stat upgrades. It's very different from other FF games, but that is where it comes from.

The graphics are a hodge-podge of rips, RTP and custom, maps do suffer from the typical large map syndrome, sadly, but as was usual of the era in which it was made, most attention was focussed on story and systems and this game pulls both off quite well. There are a few different kind of custom systems in play and any player will find something interesting to take away from the game.

If needed you can find a walkthrough here: https://indiefaqs.com/index.php/FinalFantasyEndlessNovaWalkthrough

Random Fact: in 2021 ReloadPsi released an fan-updated version with more dialogues, rebalanced battles, bug fixes and more. You may get this version from the links below:

Final Verdict: With an epic tale and a nice setting, maybe not always presented in the best way, Final Fantasy: Endless Nova is still an impressive work of love and a good game to play still now that there are lots of similar games. This is original but still faitful to the genre and I had fun playing it despite some "clunky" design choices. The game is also old, so sprites and charsets aren't probably as good as those that can be found today (those from the Record Keeper would be better, for example), but the author did a great job with the few resources available.
This is a classic, and surely one of the best, if not THE best of the Final Fantasy themed Rpgmaker games available!

Grimorum by RedCube

Germany, 26th of April, 1998. The hardened detective Jonas Stark is on a hunt for a brutal killer whos ordered by a secret organization called "the Circle". Yet no matter how close his investigations get, the Circle always seems to be one step ahead and even the killer is much closer than Stark might think. After he loses everything, he decides to solve the case on his own and stop the cirlce from fulfilling their terrible plans but... can he?

Grimorum is a dark horror adventure by RedCube: the game consists in visual novel sections between many stealth levels and some rare shooting. The game is all in real time and includes various levels in which we play as different characters: from a cop to a professional killer, that are the main protagonists of the story, to a madman escaped from an asylum or a victim. If I have to make a comparison with a notorious game series, this can be equipareted to the Manhunt series by Rocklstar Games, even if Grimorum has supernatural and horror elements.

WARNING: the game includes lots of adult content - gore, nudity, violence, and creepy situations that some people can find quite disturbing and unnecessary (most disturbing scenes are visualized, so yeah, be ready for pixelated gore details and a couple of anime gore pics)

Random Fact: originally the first version of Grimorum was made in german and called "Lemtingas Metas", then remade into the game we have today. The inspiration mainly came from crime shows and the horror series Dooms by MR BIG T

Final Verdict: If you can tolerate the themes of sex and violence, gore and creepy scenes, (this was not a problem for me) and a gameplay that is surely a clever and courageous idea but far from perfect and sometimes a bit frustrating in play (and this was a bit of a problem for me in some parts) you will have fun, I'm sure. Graphics and story (dialogues, characters, everything is well done with lot of attention to the details) are in my opinion excellent, this is a grim and dark world without powerful heroes, full of frail humans with their weaknesses. In short, this is a nice action-horror game very different from most other Rpgmaker games.

Shadow's Penance & Penance by Bluelight Phoenix

The war against magic is here. Grey and George are two brothers whose life turns upside down when their home gets destroyed by an organization called New Dawn. Caught in the middle of the war, as Rhodya is splitting in two (between those who have magic blood and those who don't), Grey and George will discover that they have a bigger role to play. They decide to embark on a journey to stop New Dawn and find out the truth about their heritage and why their home was destroyed.

Shadow's Penance is what I called a "modern jrpg": while it offers customization of the party members, minigames, puzzles, dungeons and adventures like the old classic Rpgmaker games, it also modernizes many aspects. For example there is no level-up system, no grinding required: characters are improved using crystals that are found around, and this encourages to explore and complete subquest rather than play lots of random battles. There is also a great story in which you have many choices, some may even make the protagonist to join the bad guys against the forces of good! The game also includes a more difficult optional mode.

Random Fact: Shadow's Penance is actually a remake of an older game by BluePhoenix, called simply Penance. See below for it.

Like other games I posted before, such as Onyx and Vanity, also Shadow Penance is the second release of an older game, called Penance. This was the prototype for Shadow's Penance, and features a simpler story, less characters and content and the plot is more or less the same. Except for the lack of portraits, some different maps and locations, this game is just an inferior version of the complete one.
this game was well known for having a good and an evil path, that took the game in two completely different directions, offering different battles and challenges. This was a very clear choice that happened during a particular event, and the remake made much more difficult betraying the old friends for the protagonist, but it's still a possible choice also in the new version.

EXTRA -  Penance: it has been centuries since the war against the demons. Humanity was victorious and managed to defeat them with the help of the "Shifters", humans with all shorts of magical powers blessed with longevity. They defeated the demons and helped humanity recover its lands. However, you can't have eternal peace when you're dealing with the humans. There is a civil war between the humans and the shifters that is about to break unless somebody does something to stop it. An organization called New Dawn has proclaimed war against humanity and their actions have split the world in two.

Penance is basically a first version of Shadow Penance, a little more simpler, shorter, with less content and more humor. The story is more or less identical and the game uses the same system of upgrades without levels, but the story is more straight to the point and still enjoyable, although the reboot improves the original in every aspect, also introducing new interesting characters.

Final Verdict: Shadow Penance is everything I could have asked from an adventure game: it have battles, puzzles, funny moments, and it's overall enjoyable. I admit I also liked the old version, but many aspects I didn't like (some maps, the lack of facesets) were finally corrected and the story was also remade more interesting and fun. Characters are also more developed and while it's not a perfect game it was more polished and does everything just fine.
Concerning instead Penance, well that is an enjoyable game, still a little rough and unrefined in some parts. The story is basically the same of the remake, so play it only if you are really curious. The one I recommend is in fact the newest edition, that does everything better.

Runic Cipher by Messiah_X

The story follows a young rebel group by the name of EDGE, whose leader, Talon, vows to seek vengeance against the Hilgar Empire for their war crimes against his homeland, Calupa. Alongside Talon, he has the support of Rick, a scout who loves cracking up jokes, and Veronica, an engineer with the acquired knowledge of creating explosives. Throughout the course of their journey, they will meet dozens of other interesting characters, including a few they'd never imagine being on their side...or are they?

Runic Cypher is a classic fantasy jrpg with a great cast of likeable characters involved in an epic quest. It's a pretty old-styled experience that concerning the gameplay doesn't exactly offers anything new, but gorgeous graphics and a great story. Enjoyable expecially if you played the old classics.

Random Fact: this game is a love letter to the SNES jrpg game in particular FFVI. Most aspects are the same, from combat to the party selection system... well, except for the detail that you ride a horse around the map and NOT a chocobo!

Final Verdict: Runic Cipher is not a game that holds you by hand or gives clear directions, but the same could have been said for Final Fantasy VI (I mean for example after escaping Narshe or Figaro Castle you HAVE a direction or destination, still you are free to wander around the map and no one forces you to go there or gives any indication!).
The difficulty of some parts may be a stylistic choice, but I think that not every player would love the difficulty (I mean save points + challenging combat? Uhm...), at least the frequence of the enemy encounters is well set out, they're in fact not too frequent (still there are some scripted and unavoidable assaults).

The Garland Enigma by Rodpop

Garland, the main antagonist in Final Fantasy, is going to be defeated once again by the Warriors of Lights: in fact he lives a loop where the heroes defeat him each time. But NOT this time! The power of the Dark Orb and a mysterious helper make him able to win the final battle. However he then wakes up somewhere in a dungeon with no memories except of his own name... what is going on?

The Garland Enigma, originally named The Garland Empire, is a humorous fangame, and a parody of the source material: we play as a single character, whose class can be chosen among those of the first Final Fantasy, and then the game becomes a classic Rpgmaker adventure with some optional minigames included. The game uses edits from FF but also music from other games, for example Mortal Kombat.

Random Fact: in the beginning, even before the prologue starts, we have to choose the composition of the Warriors of Light. Mind that even if the game does not explain this, the first class we will choose is the class of the first character and our alter ego that we play in the game when the real adventure starts.

Final Verdict: a parody, not just of FF, but of the whole jrpg genre. Very entertaining, unfortunately incomplete, like most of the games by Rodpop.
