Three the Hard Way by Iishernon

Many years ago, a mysterious group of monsters called "Kaibutsu" appeared in Durham Kingdom and ravaged the land. No one was able to resist their power, that is, until a hero named Carolus emerged. He was able to defeat the Kaibutsu leader, who happened to be his sister, and save the nation. After this, the people made him their king, that now, after 65 years, still rules the lands through his vassal dukes.

We play as Vance, the young bartender of the town of Somerset, that is rather bored and believes he needs some excitement and some big money. So he starts a journey with the intention to become a mercenary. Soon Vance finds himself getting mixed up in a conflict and 2ventually becomes the nation's hope to stop the return of the Kaibutsu.

Three the Hard Way is a complete epic fantasy rpg with lot of content and many interesting features: the game includes a peculiar anti-grinding levelling system, minigames, choices and paths that may lead to different dungeons and boss battles, and there are nine permanent party members, plus four other temporary allies. Moreover the game includes puzzles, an arena, gambling and some minigames.

A spin-off called The Queen's Court was planned but never realized. However it was not a direct sequel, it was set years after the events of the previous game and was going to be a fantasy life simulator.

Random Fact: at a certain point there is the choice to three paths. Taking the boat trip to Dillon will let the player obtain an extra party member, Roper, and also meet sayan ninja girl called Miaka: this is a reference to Iishernon's first complete game, Miaka's Great Adventure. It will be posted here here too someday. However there are also many other cameos in the game, like a scene with RpgAdvocate, the game developer best known for the series Phylomortis.

Final Verdict: this was one of the first Rpgmaker games I played, and still stands as an impressive work with lots of likeable characters, monsters and quests, some optional and missable. Mapping is not the strong point, probably, but all the rest is absolutely high quality!
