Mine Fu by Avee

As the young disciple of Wuzan, the great Mine Fu master, brave ninja Ranju must hunt down the Seven Demons of Bom-Bom to save the world!
Previously sealed by the master, the Demons must be defeated once and for all!

Use your knowledge in laying down mines to blow up every Monster Cement tile specially made by the Demons! Walk over each tile before leaving the stage to beat the puzzle, but only once! Otherwise you will blow yourself up with your own arsenal!
Swing your sword, throw some shurikens and use other ninja gear to topple your opponents!
Laying down mines and beating enemies increase Score and Extra Lives!
Aim for the highest Score possible!

Great perils await Ranju in the 9 puzzle-filled and monster-occupied stages!
Fight your way through sandy beaches, murky swamps and boiling volcanoes!
Use your rock-pushing, pit-jumping and move-timing skills to reach the boss at the end of every stage!

Mine Fu is a puzzle game where our ninja will automatically mine all the "demon tiles" (some square with a face that change after it's mined) just standing on them. The problem is that he cannot walk twice on the same tile after mining it, so it's important to plan a path that will mine all the demon tiles and let our hero exit the area. To make the things easier there is the presence of normal ground (that isn't mined when the ninja walk on it) and the ability to jump one tile (while this is explained later, the ability is immediately available), while some enemies will make instead everything more complicated.
The little ninja can attack with his sword, but pay attention that every enemy has a different behaviour, some just move following fixed patterns, others run towards the ninja, some instead do not move and use ranged attacks.
There are gadgets that can be found hidden inside some breakable containers: shurikens and flaming swords that permits to attack from distance, a log that gives a couple of seconds of invulnerability, the grappling hook that lets the ninja cross huge gaps and the extra life that is always handy!
But pay attention that you can also find the black demon, that resets the level (you have to restart it but without losing a life, so take note of the container and avoid breaking it again!).

Random Fact: the game doesn't take itself seriously at all, and makes reference to all kinds of standard boss-ranting and senseless plots.

Final Verdict: the game is in my opinion pretty original and well done. I love how new element are progressively introduced like the rocks, the use of the grappling hook and the pink exploding tiles. Sometimes the bonuses are rather useless (it happened to find the invulnerability bonus in a level with no enemies!), in other places they are instead brillantly used (like the level with three enemies and a large gap between them and the ninja. Here you find a grappling hook and several shurikens to kill them before traversing the large pit), and I also find a couple of bugs like restarting a level and see some enemies dying without even touching them, and some levels being skipped (happened a couple of time, I just could see them briefly, and I remember playing them before... but sometimes the game decided to skip to the next level! Uh ok!).

There are also some minor problems that aren't bugs, like the fact that some opponents are extremely fast and for this reason hard to fight due to the slow moments of the ninja, and the lack of a message if you exit a level without completing it. I mean, when I first encountered the shooting enemies I believed these were considered traps and I just had to avoid them... but no, you must kill them too! Anyway yes, the game said "kill EVERY hostile" but it was way earlier, and I forgot!

In the end this is a puzzle game I enjoyed a lot. There are some rough spots and little problems but I think that the difficulty is for the most part well balanced and required the use of logic and some planning in most levels.

The Blade by VietEmotion (german)

For centuries, brutal wars have dominated the seven kingdoms of the Eastern Empire. Qin Shi Huangdi, the Qin king, is obsessed with the vision of an empire where all peoples live together in peace and to achieve this goal, the monarch will stop at nothing. The Western Empire, unified by King Lu Xun, fears that the Qin king also intends to annex his lands and is preparing its troops for battle.

Emperor Lu Xun, his life drawing to a close, has appointed his general Dian Wei as his successor to Koei, the Western Empire, tasking him with restoring the old order and defending the country against a potential invasion by Qin. However, this decision clashes with the plans of the emperor's son…

The Blade is an adventure-rpg where we play as the 23 years old swordsman Huang Qi as he travels around the land while the events unfold. The game uses a mix of RTPs and lots of custom art, facesets, characters edits and so on. The style fits the oriental theme and setting. The game also uses custom menus, and the various abilities have some little images that reminds of the Pip Boy from the Fallout saga, but in this game they are instead cartoonish versions of the protagonst.

Random Fact: Huang Qi's weapon if a katana. That is a japanese sword, while he is chinese and the game is set in China, so that's pretty odd. I guess it was more cool than other weapons!

Final Verdict: while I do not know enough german to ay something about story and style, the aestetics are really pretty and mapping is pretty good. I also like he protagonist battler and its cool animations.

Matricule77: Dragon Fist by Sniper77 aka Kazuki (french)

Matricule77: Dragon Fist is a project that has been in development since 2002. It's a game set in a tough neighborhood in Japan where two gangs are at war. You play as Kazuki Sawada, who must avenge his brother's death at the hands of the Yakuza. But to see the gang leader, he must become a member himself. That's why he joins the Yakuza, a rival gang of the Kengukai.

Matricule77: Dragon Fist is an adventure with real-time action battles. It's pretty violent and realistic, offering a grim urban setting and some really excellent custom graphics, starting from a pretty impressive intro. The game is pretty much open, in the sense that you may freely wander around the city.

Award-winning game at the 2006 Alex d'Or:
- Best Universe (Bronze)
- Best Longevity (Bronze)
- Best Immersion (Bronze)

Random Fact: this is the only released game made by Sniper77 aka Kazuki alone, all the other games released by this author were in fact collaborations with at least another developer involved.

Final Verdict: this game offers action, a unique atmosphere, well-chosen music, and superb artwork by Kanshin. It's a demo, but surely worth checking it out.

Mugen Legends - Hokutomaru by taima matsumushi

Hokutomaru is the student of Andy Bogart in the Fatal Fury series. He first appeared in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and he is the protagonist of this game. The adventure begins with Andy scolding his pupil for being lazy, and sends him to collect groceries at the nearby Tazawa Village. However the bandits of Earthquake's gang are roaming the region. However the confrontation with the members of the Mad Gear gang will soon be inevitable.

Mugen Legends - Hokutomaru starts selecting the version of Hakutumaru you prefer, Slash or Bust, one is more defensive and has more ability points, the other is faster and more offensive, in any case there isn't a lot of difference. The game is a linear adventure rpg with the occasional choice, and includes three missions and one sidequest. Combat uses the classic Rpgmaker system, but it's fast and lethal, so it's preferable to have a good number of healing items and consumables and grind a little, since saving is limited to some locations. The graphics are the strong point of the game, that includes some optional cutscenes and randomized dream sequences that may explain more about the past events and the background of the protagonist.

Random Fact: the game includes characters for almost every fighting game: we have Hokutomaru and Andy from the Fatal Fury series, Earthquake, Ukyo and Haomaru from the Samurai Shodown series, Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat, the various bosses from Final Fight, Ryu from Street Fighter, and other characters from Waku Waku 7, Ninja Masters and World Heroes.

Final Verdict: although the graphics are sometimes a little mismatched due to the rips from games with different styles (not to mention that Earthquake's charset has a standard size, while he is a giant of man. And I've already found another game that used a bigger charset for him) the fast combat and movement makes this game fun even if pretty challenging from what concerns some battle encounters.

Alternate - Virus of Ragnarök by Rosa Canina (german)

Tomoya Okazaki's story has been a long and arduous journey. The girl from Kyoto, the daughter of an alcoholic former star lawyer, had lived her entire life as a boy. Only when she accidentally saved a goddess one night did she regain her true body. But this unwanted gender swap plunged her deeper and deeper into a feud between her family and the gods.

Finally, when AVoR begins, she believes she can finally end the feud... only to find herself stranded in a strange, primeval forest minutes later. Together with a few friends, she embarks on a journey spanning time and dimensions, always searching for the truth behind this strange voyage and always racing against time. For the power that beats within Tomoya harbors another, terrible secret.

Will Tomoya Okazaki ever find her way home? Why was she hurled through space and time in the first place? Why are so many of her old friends also in this time, regardless of whether they were involved in the feud or not? And will she really find answers to these questions in Tokyo, at this strange organization that calls itself a "faction"?

Alternate - Virus of Ragnarök is a card based rpg with an epic story and many characters involved. The game uses a mix of classic RTPS, edits, rips and custom made CGs to the maximum effects. Lots of custom menus, systems, minigames and puzzles, for many hours of adventure. It's pretty much impressive under every aspect.

In fact in 2012 the game obtained the following RPG Atelier Goldener Deiji awards:

- Best Plot
- Best Production
- Best Female Lead Character
- Best Animations
- Best Artworks
- Best Graphic
- Best Gameplay
- Best Turn Based Combat System
- Best Dungeon Design
- Best Minigame

Random Fact: this is a fangame based on the Clannad japanese visual novel series by the software company Key, and focuses on the final parts of the Tomoya saga. The game includes also many cameos of Type-Moon characters.

Final Verdict: a masterpiece. Lots of content, original combat system and impressive animations and cutscenes, it really shines and shows what can be done with Rpgmaker 2003. If you speak german you will enjoy this game.

Ketsuro by sriden (french)

The story takes place in 1581, in the remote northern reaches of China. Japanese migrants settled here as early as the 15th century, establishing their own small, independent territory in these forgotten lands. They blended local cultures with those of the Mongols and Chinese, but one aspect of their original Japanese culture remained deeply ingrained: the veneration of the sword.

In short, it is in this mountainous and barbaric environment that we find our hero: Heiden. He belongs to a resistance group of skilled warriors who oppose the sordid regime of Kyôda, a brutal and corrupt tyrant who has been poisoning the territory for 17 years. But an unexpected alliance might hasten the bloody fate of this small territory.

Ketsuro is an oriental adventure in which we play as a swordsman that later is joined in his adventures by other warriors. The game is mostly a realistic/historical adventure with battle against human opponents and wild animals, anyway the system is the usual Rpgmaker 2003 with some edited sprites and rips from games like Samurai Shodown and The Last Blade. The game also includes action sections, and saving can be done at the stone lanterns.

Award-winning game at the 2022 Alex d'Or:  - Best Direction

Random Fact: the hand-drawn portraits are sketches scribbled in ballpoint pen by the author in the margins of his school notebooks between 1997 and 2003,  where he drew these characters, among others, to hone his drawing skills from scratch.  The game's ending was also created using hand-drawn animation.
Inside the game you can also find a drawing school where you may see additional artworks.

There was also an attempt to make the game using only custom made graphics, as you can see in the video below.

Final Verdict: an excellent adventure game with a perfectly reacreated oriental setting. Visually really impressive with excellent music and an evocative setting, and it's even a complete story.

The Righteous, a Kowloon Tale by Judeau

It's the 1971: Bei Mao Xiong and Niu Dian Kuan are both policemen of the Hong Kong Police Force. After a bloody confrontation between them and the Black Snake Triad, Bei Mao Xiongs family gets brutally killed. Although Mao Xiong is innocent, all police evidence proofs him to be the murderer. After an extremely doubtful trial, Bei Mao Xiong is sentenced to 15 years of prison. Convinced of the fact that the Black Snake Triad is responsible for his family's death, Bei Mao Xiong starts so exercise for his bloody vengeance by using a book that teaches him the old fighting technique "Hokuto Shinken".

After 15 years have passed, all clues lead Bei Mao Xiong into the Kowloon Walled City, where he has to face incredibly brutal and dangerous foes in order to find out the truth about his family's death.

"The Righteous - A Kowloon Tale" is a linear action adventure-beat 'em up, inspired by films/series like Fist of the North Star, Riki-Oh, A Better Tomorrow, Big Trouble in Little China, Street Fighter II, Yakuza and many more. The game consists in visiting various areas and fighting one or more opponents in real-time battles. Normal enemies will have just melee attacks, while bosses possess different special moves or gimmicks.

The game starts rather easy but then it becomes more and more difficult, luckily you can immediately retry every combat from the start how many times you want, and the games after 15 retries takes pity of you asking to lower the difficulty. The progress can be saved more or less after every boss, anyway don't expect a very long game since it was made for an event, however there are also a couple of minigames/diversions.
The adventure is quite spectacular, extremely violent and cheesy too: there are punks, criminals, nazis, five weird martial artists, various supernatural creatures and a sorcerer!

It was the winner of the first prize of the German "Ten Words Contest 2011".

Random Fact: the game was the winner of the first prize of the German "Ten Words Contest 2011".

Final Verdict: a short and linear sequence of battles with a story attached, it's a pretty unique and fun game, despite Rpgmaker isn't really a system designed for this kind of games. But the game isn't punishing so it was ok. An interesting experiment for sure.

Shichimenchouken, Sword of the Seven-Faced Bird by Felix Trapper

The protagonist of this story is Kojitsuke, a young thief that lives in a setting inspired by feudal Japan called Tsai. In attempting to steal medicine to heal his sickly father Yoshinori, he is caught and forced to go on a quest to acquire the ingredients himself. With the aid of numerous allies Kojituske explores the land and he discovers that there is something more sinister at work in the land that must be fought.

Shichimenchouken is an oriental rpgmaker adventure created by someone who really likes Japan. The game is styled as a classic SNES rpg but with some interesting features: for example an important aspect of the game is the use of a barter system: in the game there is no "gold" but you rather trade items for other items. Advanced armors and weapons also require to give a lesser item. Another quite peculiar feature is the use of multiple parties: from a certain point we can play alternately with two full parties of four for a total of eight characters!

Despite the oriental setting there are some odd music choices, for example the barter tutorial used a 8-bit version of Rock DJ by Robbie Williams. And the developer even mentions the title of the song itself!

Random Fact: entering the back of the house in front of Kojitsuke's home sends you to a map of a cave with some unreachable monsters wandering around, and a sign with written a single sentence: "HEY, STUPID! YOU ARE IN THE WRONG GAME!". There are other weird maps inside the game, like for example a bathroom with a giant Wc that's clearly out of place.

Final Verdict: a classic Rpgmaker adventure game with many peculiarities, it may be pretty old and some parts are even a little silly, anyway it shows a lot of attention to the details.

Retsu Arashi Psychic Storm by Skyman07

Retsu Arashi Psychic Storm is a story driven Rpgmaker adventure inspired by classic martial art movies: Toko is a student of Master Tao, but the dojo where he trains is attacked by a group of ninjas lead by a mysterious masked figure. This is just the beginning of an adventure that will take Toko to battle the forces of evil, aided by his friends Yuriko and Rin Hontai, and save his hometown.

A 2005 Rpgmaker complete game, it was one of the first that used lots of animations for party members and enemies, utilizing lots of custom edited sprites from classic 2D fighting games. The game is very linear and has also set battles, meaning that encounters are never avoidable, there are a couple of diversions like fishing, collecting fireflies and avoiding traps, but not much else. Anyway the game is polished, maps are very good, and it's very different from most other Rpgmaker games. The folder of the game includes a map of the main village and a walkthrough.

Random Fact: the game is complete and Toko's adventure has a conclusion, but the ending hints at further adventures: not only new locations of the world are mentioned, but the game assets and sprites also include some unused sprites and backgrounds of characters and places that were probably going to appear in the further adventures of Toko, since they seem to belong to a more modern/western setting.

Final Verdict: a pretty unique game for the time in which was made, it has some aspects that couls have been improved: there are few items and consumables, few enemy types and the battles are all unavoidable, an aspect that makes especially the final part of the game a slog. But combat aside this is a pretty good adventure game.
