The Righteous, a Kowloon Tale by Judeau

It's the 1971: Bei Mao Xiong and Niu Dian Kuan are both policemen of the Hong Kong Police Force. After a bloody confrontation between them and the Black Snake Triad, Bei Mao Xiongs family gets brutally killed. Although Mao Xiong is innocent, all police evidence proofs him to be the murderer. After an extremely doubtful trial, Bei Mao Xiong is sentenced to 15 years of prison. Convinced of the fact that the Black Snake Triad is responsible for his family's death, Bei Mao Xiong starts so exercise for his bloody vengeance by using a book that teaches him the old fighting technique "Hokuto Shinken".

After 15 years have passed, all clues lead Bei Mao Xiong into the Kowloon Walled City, where he has to face incredibly brutal and dangerous foes in order to find out the truth about his family's death.

"The Righteous - A Kowloon Tale" is a linear action adventure-beat 'em up, inspired by films/series like Fist of the North Star, Riki-Oh, A Better Tomorrow, Big Trouble in Little China, Street Fighter II, Yakuza and many more. The game consists in visiting various areas and fighting one or more opponents in real-time battles. Normal enemies will have just melee attacks, while bosses possess different special moves or gimmicks.

The game starts rather easy but then it becomes more and more difficult, luckily you can immediately retry every combat from the start how many times you want, and the games after 15 retries takes pity of you asking to lower the difficulty. The progress can be saved more or less after every boss, anyway don't expect a very long game since it was made for an event, however there are also a couple of minigames/diversions.
The adventure is quite spectacular, extremely violent and cheesy too: there are punks, criminals, nazis, five weird martial artists, various supernatural creatures and a sorcerer!

It was the winner of the first prize of the German "Ten Words Contest 2011".

Random Fact: the game was the winner of the first prize of the German "Ten Words Contest 2011".

Final Verdict: a short and linear sequence of battles with a story attached, it's a pretty unique and fun game, despite Rpgmaker isn't really a system designed for this kind of games. But the game isn't punishing so it was ok. An interesting experiment for sure.
