Bikini Smoker - ビキニスモーカー Part 1 & 2 by Bokkyguy (japanese)

Bikini Smoker - ビキニスモーカー, like Psycho Platoon, is a visual novel with battles in two parts. It starts with a couple of girls (in bikini, of course) exploring a ship and fighting bizarre enemies. Soon they will found that a poweful enemy is opposing them, none other than Ronald McDonald.

WARNING: the game includes some sexy scenes and inuendos, nothing explicit.

Bikini Smoker is the first game released by Bokkyguy (Kazuyoshi Hashimoto), and it's a shorter and simpler game compared to Psycho Platoon: combat is simpler and animations are less flashy, still original and well made. Still no levels, no random battles, no equipment managements, levels or other rpg elements. The adventure is also linear, except for the second part that has two possible epilogues, and one links to one of the endings of Psycho Platoon. This game received also a spin-off doujin game.

Random Fact: in this game characters may heal smoking cigarettes, that they have in limite quantity and are automatically restocked after each battle. This is the reason why the game is called Bikini Smoker, of course.

This is a direct sequel from the first game following the last battle on the broken down ship. Later the two girls are joined by a third girl to fight a series of selected warriors of the enemy organization before the final battle.

Aside for the addition of a new playable character there isn't much else added to the game compared to the first half of the story. The difficult doesn't increase nor the characters add new abilities or more hitpoints. Clearly there are more silly characters and more battles, and a final choice that will determine the epilogue for the story, good or bad.

Rmarchiv.de

Random Fact: the third girl that joins the team is none other than a schoolmate and best friend of the psychic pyromancer of Psycho Platoon, and appears in both games, but she's playable only here. Meanwhile the protagonist of this game appeared in the epilogue of Psycho Platoon, and onf od the endings of this game also connects with that game.

Final Verdict: a little game, really simpler than Psycho Platoon for simpler mechanics, graphics and story. However it's still a well made short visual novel adventure, the custom animations and art are really pretty good.

The Rose Chronicles by Legacy001

Rose Chronicles follows Roselle as she goes 7 years into the past to prevent a tragedy from occurring. The game plays similar to a 2005 GBA game: Riviera. In which you are not able to move a character around the map, but rather drag a cursor around clicking on nodes to advance the story.

A very unique gem of a game, the author ripped the sprites from a game called Hoshigami, then formated it to rm2k3 himself, and adapted the maps to the isometric characters, but since Rpgmaker 2000/2003 can only do diagonal movement in special cases, Legacy001 opted for some comprimises. The payoff? The game ends up exhibiting a distinct look compared to other rm2k/3 games. The demo is about  4-6 hours long.

Random Fact: The Rose Chronicles was just a side project made by Legacy001,worked on to take a break from doing the Naufragar series. Though it’s understandable why the project took too much effort to continue working on. In the end it ended up being one of the more memorable demos of the mid-GW era.

Final Verdict: this was a rather unique experiment that showed what can be accomplished using Rpgmaker in a different way, and if really offers something new and original. A must play game.

Teddy's Journey by HolyHorror

Teddy's Journey is the story of Teddy , a short pale introvert who made the decision to leave his rainy village in the forest to start a trip, in the hopes of discovering new and interesting landscapes and, hopefully, find true love. In one of his dreams, Teddy will encounter a mysterious woman, "Sweetener", whom he'll be able to meet again whenever he sleeps.

Explore varied and surreal landscapes, interact with gentle technicolor npcs and cryptids, and help Teddy face his own fears and negative emotions in combat, with mysterious monsters that serve as metaphor for the inner turmoil within Teddy.

Teddy's Journey is an exploration rpg drawing inspiration from Rpgmaker classics like Space Funeral and Yume Nikki, the first being the art style's influence, and the second being the main inspiration for the labyrinthic dream segments. The game is basically a linear adventure with battles against wandering enemies. The main character Teddy sometimes is assisted in battles by the mysterious Sweetener or by his two friends Joe and Vincent, and each character has different skills. These consume energy/mana points that are recovered smoking cigarettes, where life points are instead recovered drinking coffee.

Random Fact: during a game it's always possible to take a bath inside Teddy's house. This leads to a cutscene with music but it's a useless interaction that has totally no effects nor leads to any change, since Teddy isn't healed by this choice, nor he gets his mana points back.

Final Verdict: Teddy's Journey is a little charming surreal game that takes inspiration from some classic rpgmaker games, but without copying them. The story and characters are original, likeable and the plot is interesting even if it never really starts and just gives a lot of ideas about what was going to happen next: the spirits are getting restless so the battles were going to be more frequent and dangerous, anyway Sweetener wasn't part of the dream but a real dreamer, so it was obvious that Teddy and Sweetener were going to meet each other... or so I think. Really a pity this hasn't been completed since it's a very interesting and unique kind of adventure.

Bounty Angel 2 by Sidewinder

It is the star year 2168. 50 years have passed since the Battle of Vulkan. The Resource Wars which once brought fire to the galaxy have since faded away into memory, and new Empires have arisen from the ashes. Throughout this, the strong continue to feed on the weak, and an uneasy peace is kept by a special group of bounty hunters, commonly known as “Angels.”

The new protagonist is Ericka Falken, pilot of the Valkyrie. Ericka will perform a series of missions (some are obligatory, others are optional) travelling between planets, hunt space pirates for money and upgrade her spaceship with the hard earned cash.

Bounty Angel 2 is another hybrid RPG/Visual Novel with a custom battle system, basically an upgraded version of the first game: it's a similar adventure Anya in the previous game, but there is s lot more of everything: more planets to visit, more locations, more spaceship upgrades, more Npcs. All actions are managed through the menus interface, exactly like in the first game. The combat is a little more complex, but there aren't mich changes aside for the expanded content and better graphics.

This game contains violence and adult themes that might not be suitable for some players.

Random Fact: the game takes place many years after the first, and Anya Von Tannhauser, the pilot of the Nightbird from the first game is also briefly mentioned. Once again there will be three (the main protagonist and two others associates) the girls instrumental to the victory, even if, since this is a demo, the main quest ends with a cliffhanger.

Final Verdict: though this adventure ends with a cliffanger, it is longer and has more variety that the first one. I also liked the cast, especially the three protagonists (even if the blonde girl has a small role in the adventure). Graphically is a step up from the first adventure, and I overall liked the setting and the lore of the game. I don't know if this is easier than the first or playing the first has made me more cautious and skilled, anyway you doi not need to buy every upgrade to finish the story. That is a good story, because yes, this is first a visual novel with many cool parts, like the Council of the Smugglers (I liked that section!).

My only gripe is that some parts would have benefit of more explanations, I'm talking about combat but also some activities like the puzzle in the temple and the bomb that has to be defused... it's a trial and error, and maybe some less experienced player may have some problems with that (well, I had, but I managed to win forcing myself to understand the mechanics and win, so it can be done without sweating too much, no worries!). I also did not mind the use of generic black shapes for minor characters, like in tue first game, anyway the HUDs and the cutscenes are impressive considering that this game is made with Rm2k3!

Bounty Angel by Sidewinder

Almost two millennia have passed since mankind escaped its dying homeworld, and built a new civilization among the stars. But nothing was learned and the mistakes that destroyed Lost Earth have been repeated a hundredfold. The denizens of the Milky Way now find themselves trapped in a brutal war for resources and survival. Millions of refugees flee for the relative safety of the Magellanic Cloud satellite galaxies.

The only known corridor is through an area of space known as the Magellanic Stream, though better known to its inhabitants as Hell's Gate. Pirates operate openly here, killing and enslaving thousands. Law and order is maintained by freelance bounty hunters, commonly known as Angels.

Anya Von Tannhauser is one of them, and she will have to form a squad to stop the menace that threatens the people of the Magellanic Stream.

Bounty Angel is a hybrid RPG/Visual Novel with a custom battle system and a bunch of FMVs I made in Blender. All actions are selected by the menus, the game uses a quite simple turn-based spaceship battle system. It's a fairly open game that includes a linear storyline and some optional, and in some case repeatable, sidequests.

Before even starting the game you have to decide two different things: the first is if you want to play at medium difficulty (that gives you limited money, and you have to earn the rest to buy upgrades and repair) or story mode (that gives you a ton of money so you can buy everything from the start). Then you have to choose if you want realistic characters or anime characters. This is just a cosmetic choice, by the way the realistic one just has the protagonist, and the anime version has only the named characters, all the rest are just black silhouettes.

This game contains violence and adult themes that might not be suitable for some players.

Random Fact: this game was a submission for the 2018 Theme Roulette event on RMN, anyway it spawned a sequel, Bounty Angel 2 and even a sort of remake called Psi Dogs: Suns of Antares. Unfortunately the remake was planned, but never released.

Final Verdict: Bounty Angel is born from quite interesting concept, its only problem is that it was made for the Theme Roulette Challenge in 2018, so obviously it was made in a short time: the result is a mini-game and short visual novel that's quite good due to its originality and interesting plot, gameplay is simple but graphics are stunning and well recreates a gritty sci-fi setting. Likewise music, that is from some well known sources (like for example Baldur's Gate) is appropriate and the whole experience is good.

My only problem with this game is that there is not satisfying ending, not even a screen or ending slide, and that's something I felt missing (it's true that some old games of the past just wrote "congatulations, you win" and that's it!). The rest is not bad at all, it's something different from the usual rpg, and I am pretty sure that the developer with just some more time could provide an really bigger, refined, improved and more complex remake/sequel of this game, because it shows how much work went into narration, graphics and gameplay.

Sainth by Neok

Years after the events of "Wraith", a young girl named Lily, has a chance encounter with someone familiar. Following that, she soon finds herself stranded in a strange place with nary a soul in sight. As she struggles to gain her bearings, a voice echoes inside her head. It is the World Tree, telling her to seek out her memories from long ago...

Wraith: The Second Chapter ~Sainth~ follows the story of Lily Collins whose life has changed after the disappearance of her friend Kana Alywin from the prequel and once again meeting her after 3 years.

Sainth, or Wraith: The Second Chapter, is a sequel of the he survival horror Wraith that focuses on a secondary character, the blonde Lily. This time the game is a visual novel adventure with exploration and searching for items, plus many dialogues, and this makes it pretty different from the first game. Anyway what's still here are the mystery-horror elements, the game is in fact dark and like the first one it includes two different possible endings.

Random Fact: the game uses a side-view platform-like style that was already used in Alter Aila Genesis. While the setting and the game is completely different, the exploration of the maps is pretty similar to the other game, making this game even more different from the prequel.

Final Verdict: Sainth is a totally different game compared to the first one, maybe not even a game but a story (even if it has two different endings, one of these is very depressing!), anyway I liked its originality (side scrolling rpgmaker? Really uncommon) and the narrative segments. It's probably not a game for everyone, especially for those who want a real challenge, puzzles or a more complex gameplay, but for me it was a good experience. Naok's art skills and style also makes this adventure look unique.
In the end, even if this game may not appeal everyone is still an enjoyable story if you played the previous game, maybe not a perfect conclusion to the series, but still a pleasant surprise!

Space Attorney by Superstroke & riderx40

Eris is a young attorney who worked in the purgatory for several years, until one day he became the accused in a rather weird case that left him in the spot. Can Eris win this trial with his friends or he will be sentenced to the blackhole for eternity?

Space Attorney is a little visual novel made for the 2016 Swapsie event by two developers: Superstroke made the first half and riderx40 the second. It's a very strange visual novel with surreal elements since it's about a lawyer that works in Purgatory that gets in trouble with aliens. Yeah. The game is short but very stylish, combining cutscenes with black-and-white silouhuettes to colorful slides.

Random Fact: while this is TECHNICALLY a fangame and parody of Ace Attorney it's so detached from the source material that you don't need to know anything (except maybe that it's about a lawyer!), I mean it's a different game, there aren't cameos of characters from the series nor there is anything that relates to it. Probably it was just a pun on the title.

Final Verdict: Space Attorney was a game I probably found while looking for Ace Attorney fangames, but well this game is really not what I expected. Well I'm not sure anyone can expect something from this game, that's really peculiar, original and unique adventure, surely not without flaws but probably this can be excused being this an event game also done by two different developers. That's not easy!
So if you want to play a bizarre interactive visual novel ("so bad it's so good")... you won't be disappointed! Unrefined, but wildly awesome.

Ruina - Fairy Tale of the Forgotten Ruins by Shoukichi Karekusa

The basic story of Ruina involves the search for the root cause of an enigmatic calamity as it strikes the Kness Dukedom. The player will meet a diverse cast of characters and fantastic races as various forces work to understand the purpose—and perhaps the benefit—of a network of sprawling, underground ruins, which just so happen to be situated directly beneath your hometown.

Ruina contains four origin stories to play, each with events, CGs, and an area unique to themselves, along with New Game+ features.

Ruina is a JRPG inspired heavily by classic adventure role-playing video games like Dragon Quest and tabletop role-playing games. If you’re familiar with anything in the RPG Maker 2000 engine, you’ll find that its battling is not terribly customized beyond what’s included in the program. The main draws of Ruina are its intricately-woven story and its gorgeous original artwork, including portraits, backdrops, event CGs, maps, and more.

Random Fact: the game is going to be remade. The release is planned to be through Steam, and you can find the page here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3185060/_/
And the gameplay trailer of the new version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNUunY8ZM7s

Final Verdict: An award-winning free-to-play Japanese RM2k game, now available in English! The game is around 40 hours long, has an original exploration system and many party members (but you can only have 3 characters at one given except in escort missions or special scenario). A really unique game, inspired by gamebooks!

Grimorum by RedCube

Germany, 26th of April, 1998. The hardened detective Jonas Stark is on a hunt for a brutal killer whos ordered by a secret organization called "the Circle". Yet no matter how close his investigations get, the Circle always seems to be one step ahead and even the killer is much closer than Stark might think. After he loses everything, he decides to solve the case on his own and stop the cirlce from fulfilling their terrible plans but... can he?

Grimorum is a dark horror adventure by RedCube: the game consists in visual novel sections between many stealth levels and some rare shooting. The game is all in real time and includes various levels in which we play as different characters: from a cop to a professional killer, that are the main protagonists of the story, to a madman escaped from an asylum or a victim. If I have to make a comparison with a notorious game series, this can be equipareted to the Manhunt series by Rocklstar Games, even if Grimorum has supernatural and horror elements.

WARNING: the game includes lots of adult content - gore, nudity, violence, and creepy situations that some people can find quite disturbing and unnecessary (most disturbing scenes are visualized, so yeah, be ready for pixelated gore details and a couple of anime gore pics)

Random Fact: originally the first version of Grimorum was made in german and called "Lemtingas Metas", then remade into the game we have today. The inspiration mainly came from crime shows and the horror series Dooms by MR BIG T

Final Verdict: If you can tolerate the themes of sex and violence, gore and creepy scenes, (this was not a problem for me) and a gameplay that is surely a clever and courageous idea but far from perfect and sometimes a bit frustrating in play (and this was a bit of a problem for me in some parts) you will have fun, I'm sure. Graphics and story (dialogues, characters, everything is well done with lot of attention to the details) are in my opinion excellent, this is a grim and dark world without powerful heroes, full of frail humans with their weaknesses. In short, this is a nice action-horror game very different from most other Rpgmaker games.

Psycho Platoon - サイコ・プラトーン & Psycho Platoon Final - サイコ・プラトーン完結編 by Bokkyguy (japanese)

The protagonist is Hiromi is a meek girl who can't adapt to office life. A series of murders begin to occur around the protagonist and her friends, who are far from normal, and the situation escalates into a major case. In the meantime a police detective starts investigating on the murder cases and will cross paths with Hiromi and his strange friends, that include a cross-dressing character in a race queen costume armed with an umbrella, a boy obsessed with voyeurism, an old man, and a psychic pyromancer.

In the beginning, the story progresses comically with a mix of quirky characters, but the atmosphere of the game changes as the truth is revealed.

WARNING: the game includes sensitive themes like suicide, sex, violence and death.

Psycho Platoon & Psycho Platoon Final is basically single adventure in two episodes made by Kazuyoshi Hashimoto aka Bokkyguy. The first game in fact will end in media res, while the second part has various possible endings that may be positive or negative for the protagonist and his friends. The game is in fact pretty linear, except for the later parts of the second episode that will determine the epilogue. This is basically a visual novel with the occasional battle, but there are no optional encounters, no levels nor equipment, battles are fixed and characters are upgraded automatically after some important events.
Despite this semplicity, the game is absolutely incredible from the visual aspect, since it uses 100% custom made assets, and has a peculiar anime style that goes from humorous scenes to dramatic and even tragic situations.

Random Fact: while the protagonist is Hiromi , the game also include different scenes in which the playable character is the middle age detective and his assistant that are investigating on the murder cases. These parts also includes different party members and battles against different enemies. This happens in both games, however most battles aren't to the death, and are just clashes to set matters straight: for example the detective will have to fight a cleaning lady to access a floor she just cleaned and continue the investigation.

The second part of the Psycho Platoon follows the events after the "Pervert Tournament" and the search from a place called Paradise. However, even after defeating a moyor opponent, the murderer is still free and Hiromi and his group of friends will face even more dangerous challenges and tragic situations.

The game plays basically like the first one, the only difference is that the playable characters gets some upgrades, obtaining more special moves while the rest of their characteristica, like the hitpoints, remain the same. The game is quite more serious in tone than the previous one and has more than one possible ending.

Random Fact: some endings of the game tie to another game that's also in two parts, called Bikini Smoker - ビキニスモーカー , another adventures a different cast, that was realized before by the developer. Some party members of that game in fact appear in the Psycho Platoon series as Npcs, like two other characters from another game,  Armored Knights - 機甲騎士団. In an optional section that takes place in a sort of "developer room" it's possible to play an extra battle encounter with these two characters.

Final Verdict: An excellent short series with a peculiar unique story, really complex characters and excellent custom made assets. Battles are more time-wasters that really enjoyable, but the effects, sprites and animations are worth watching them, luckily they are also pretty easy and won't take much time. The focus of the game is the story, a unique blend of comedy and tragedy.

Black Shadows by XRazorBlackX

Evan Silver works for a supernatural research group, known as STP, and currently his intelligence team has been sent after an occult known as the "Order of the Lunar Apocalypse", who, as per the team's info, are currently in an abandoned town that was massacred several years ago by reasons unknown, very few people survived and all of them were considered insane by the things they said.
But Evan begs to differ, though. The team presumes that they are planning mass undead revival of the millions who lost their lives, but deep down, he knows it's something far worse, perhaps, it has something to do with the massacre. So Evan, assisted only by his friend Oriot Strike, begins an adventure into the darkest depths of hell...

Black Shadows is a sort of horror linear adventure/visual novel: the game is a fast paced adventure with some puzzles and shooting minigames, no rpg elements but just dialogues and action. The graphics are mixed and uses black and white facesets. The adventure is pretty short and there are few characters involved, anyway the story is well explained even if some elments are left vague.

Random Fact: even if this short adventure is 100% complete, a sequel was planned: Black Shadows: Paranoia. This was about Evan Silver found dead in the Red Hills, however he somehow is resurrected after a while, but with no memories of of what happened and who killed him. Of course this was just the beginning of another nightmare. The game was supposed to follow the style of the first entry but with more minigames, spell-like abilities and different switchable forms.

Final Verdict: being the first game from this author, it was a little bare bones, still it's a complete adventure that tries to do something different than most other Rpgmaker products.

Pilgrim's Road by Sidewinder

Seventy five years have passed since the great atomic fires nearly scoured all life from the planet. Mutants, twisted by radiation and disease lurk in the shadows of mankind's once great buildings, while gangs rummage through the wastelands, preying on anyone weaker than them.

You play as a junker; a drifter with no place left to call home, wandering from ruin to ruin, salvaging anything of value. A passing merchant told you of a great iron tower in the middle of the New Mexican desert, where clean water and electricity can still be found, and who's denizens pay handsomely for any salvaged technology. With nowhere else to go, you've resolved to find this strange city.

Will you be able to solve the mysteries of the post-apocalyptic wasteland? Or will you die alone and forgotten in the desert?

Pilgrim's Road is an adventure with visual novel and rpg elements that is inspired by old CRPGs: half of the game is played in first person, after from a top down visual, the first is used during dialogues and battles, the second during exploration of both dungeons and settlements. The game borrows the style from the Fallout series with its retro talking heads and the custom interface. There are no experience levels, all upgrades are bought or earned, so there is no option to grind for experience.

The game in 2019 won the Misao for Best Event Game.

Random Fact: Pilgrim's Road is an event game that was created for the Abrupt Ending Party Event at RMK, and this is the reason why it's pretty short and simple. Anyway the game has TWO endings: the abrupt ending that was required for the event AND a true ending that requires four skills (to earn it you have to start with Int 17 and the needed skills, but I think it's pretty easy to understand whose skills are).

Final Verdict: this is a short but good game, the plot is simple but I liked that some things are mentioned but never clearly explained, leaving a lot of mystery about the setting and the characters that live in this bleak world. I liked these details, the foreshadowing, the narrative, but the main and best aspect is probably the style and graphics.

Phileas's Mirror by Kenetec

Phileas's Mirror is a little big adventure game in three parts about Loic, a normal 30-something guy that works, has a girlfriend and a best friend, Amelia and Raphael. During his day he will also meet the young Lucas and the old Mr. Gonzales, two persons that together with his "old acquaintances" will be present in several parts of the game. The game starts when Loic is visited by a supernatural entity who takes him on an adventure through a beautiful fantasy, and a nightmare.

Phileas's Mirror is a short surreal adventure game that mainly consists in explorations and dialogues, although there are some minigames. The story is linear, but it's well written, and the maps are all really beautiful and varied. There are lots of different resources and edits, music is well selected and the game really stands out for its fantastic locations. The game is in english and french.

Random Fact: although this isn't a jrpg, there is ONE single battle in the game, and it uses the default Rpgmaker 2003 system. Luckily it's pretty easy and if you are defeated the encounter can be re-tried.

Final Verdict: a short but excellent game. Even if it's unlikely that this will be played more than once, it's really a must-play adventure if you have one hour of free time.

Starlancer Six by Badluck

Starlancer Six is the story of a young girl, Kita Hoshiko, who thanks to a fairy named Anara becomes a magical girl and obtains magical powers which she uses to attack and destroy the evil Fuzen Empire: this dark organization is in fact threatening her world, and starts by kidnapping one of her teachers. Thus begins a saga that was intended to play out like a 13-episode anime series, but only the first was completed.

Starlancer Six plays like a story driven visual novel rpg game, and it's heavily inspired by Sailor Moon. This episode includes some exploration of the town, battles, a dungeon and a puzzle. It's worth noting the use of a custom menu and a town map for fast travel to the various locations, for the rest it's a pretty classic and bare bones game, being a pilot episode.

Random Fact: the game, as clarified before, is hevily inspired by Sailor Moon, and includes even its own version of Tuxedo Mask. The episode also ends with a trailer of the (never made) next episode, presenting a new member of the team, Aquarius. BUT if you check the game files you can also find out who  would have been the next two members of the Starlancer team, if this game had received sequel episodes.

Final Verdict: the author of this game is very good at mapping, so my only complain is about the battles, since you have a single character whose most powerful attack is the standard strike. Mana has more use for the healing spell, and this make unfortunately these battles pretty boring. But for the rest it is all good, and nice idea making a map for fast travelling around!

With Sprinkles by Soihylmz

Vanilla is timid, slow and forgetful and is part of a group of friends called the Ice Cream Kids, that includes him, Cherry, Banana, Strawberry and Chocolate. The friends need some stuff for an event Vanilla forgot about, so they send him on an errand to town. This will lead to a series of little fetch quests meeting pleasant and unpleasant people.

With Sprinkles is a lighthearted 30 minutes interactive visual novel adventure that's little more than a walking simulator: do not expect battles, puzzles or anything complex, probably the most peculiar aspects are the custom graphics and portraits of the colorful characters and world in which our forgetful hero moves. There are lots of tiny details and animations, for a very short story.

Random Fact: With Sprinkles was an originally a webcomic the author planned out back in 2011 (only a single page was made), then in 2014 it became instead this short game about the Ice Cream Kids.

Final Verdict: this is a very minimalistic game. The custom art is simple but nice and colorful, the music is wonderful: especially the town music with its Japanese vocals is extremely uplifting, catching and cute. The only issue are some spelling errors and the unappealing striped dialogue boxes, for the rest it's a pretty nice game.
