Legend of Heroen by Souefans

In the ancient past the evil demon Kartandor planned to attack the tower of master Karulord and kill him once and for all. The plan was to envelope the world into darkness and conquer it, but Karulord stopped him, unfortunately his only son, Jingo, died that day. A long time passed, and Ibeli the evil witch plans to resurrect Kartandor and resume his evil plans.

Aesierth is an old wise man with a mysterious past that lives in the small island of Londif, where he raised his grandson Herion. This young boy, after a brief encounter with the witch Ibeli, will be tasked to start a search for the forgotten mystic runes from the legends to stop the evil plans of Kartandor…

Legend of Heroen is a game that started being developed during the first days of Rpgmaker 2000. It's a classic epic fantasy adventure with many characters, but there are also action sections, puzzles and minigames, from dodging boulders to ship boarding battles, desert survival and magic duels. There are lots of custom menus and systems, graphic is colorful and maps are really well done, a mix of RTPs, various resources and edits.
The game won the 2nd place in the 2001 Hellsoft.net Competición de Juegos, and the 1st placd in the 2012 Hellsoft.net Competición de Juegos.

Random Fact: in the version of the game I played there were't enough Magic Spheres to complete all skillsets for all the playable characters. Everyone needs at least one though, so use them strategically. An advice is get Edilgarath's 'Thunder Hit' and Katy's 'Beating Up'.

Final Verdict: an incredible project, really impressive. One of the best games made by the spanish rpgmaker community and a real classic fantasy game.

Similar Mountains by Richterwilker

Bob is a young man that lives with his mother in Similar Mountains, a quiet little town in the USA. Nancy, his goth girlfriend, mysteriously disappears the day of her birthday, so Bob tonight decides to investigate her disappearance. With some help from Kevin, a weird but nice childhood friend, and Lola, an acquaintance of Nancy's, he will explore town getting involved in many different situations to uncover the truth about what happened to the missing girl.

Similar Mountains is the spiritual sequel of Mystery Falls: while agent David Parker is back after the event of the first game, this is a totally stand alone adventure. The game is still an open world mystery adventure with some action, playable arcade games and shooting sequences, but this time the custom graphics uses a different style that reminds of some old classic videogames such as Maniac Mansion and Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. The adventure has different possible endings.

WARNING: the game unlike the first contains some adult scenes and moments (even if it's all on the pixelated level, nothing more!).

Random Fact: besides David Parker, the game includes several cameos of various characters: Syd from Maniac Mansion, The little man from Twin Peaks, Enrico Pucci and other characters from Jojo's Bizarre Adventures, and there are also references to the X-Files, Twin Peaks, Castlevania and Metal Gear Solid. There are also some collectibles actions figures from other games like Mystery Falls or FF7 Before Crisis.

Final Verdict: Similar Mountain is a nice addition to the series and it's probably a good idea playing Mystery Falls before this one (the presence of Agent David Parker is an important reason to do that!). I did not mind the adult scenes since in most cases are linked to humorous moments and situations, and they provide a contrast to the general mood of mystery and gloom of other scenes.
The game has a lot of variety compared to Mystery Falls for what concerns quests and minigames, it's bizarre but entertaining and pushes the player to play and reach the end.

There is just one thing I absolutely hated about the game: Bob's friends! Yeah, these friends appears often from nowhere providing useless dialogues and casually follow the protagonist, sometimes blocking the way and in the end they are a real nuisance. They can also have a bad ending, but since they are less simpathetic than most quest givers, I did not mind that at all! I'd have preferred if they were listed as "party members" uttering a word of two during the quests to comment the situations, or maybe having a supporting role like Agent David Parker. But no, they are totally annoying (and never do or say anything remotely useful).

Ok, but despite this and other little flaws, there is a lot of improvement and I ended liking this game more than the previous one.

Three the Hard Way by Iishernon

Many years ago, a mysterious group of monsters called "Kaibutsu" appeared in Durham Kingdom and ravaged the land. No one was able to resist their power, that is, until a hero named Carolus emerged. He was able to defeat the Kaibutsu leader, who happened to be his sister, and save the nation. After this, the people made him their king, that now, after 65 years, still rules the lands through his vassal dukes.

We play as Vance, the young bartender of the town of Somerset, that is rather bored and believes he needs some excitement and some big money. So he starts a journey with the intention to become a mercenary. Soon Vance finds himself getting mixed up in a conflict and 2ventually becomes the nation's hope to stop the return of the Kaibutsu.

Three the Hard Way is a complete epic fantasy rpg with lot of content and many interesting features: the game includes a peculiar anti-grinding levelling system, minigames, choices and paths that may lead to different dungeons and boss battles, and there are nine permanent party members, plus four other temporary allies. Moreover the game includes puzzles, an arena, gambling and some minigames.

A spin-off called The Queen's Court was planned but never realized. However it was not a direct sequel, it was set years after the events of the previous game and was going to be a fantasy life simulator.

Random Fact: at a certain point there is the choice to three paths. Taking the boat trip to Dillon will let the player obtain an extra party member, Roper, and also meet a ninja girl called Miaka: this is a reference to Iishernon's first complete game, Miaka's Great Adventure. It will be posted here here too someday. However there are also many other cameos in the game, like a scene with RpgAdvocate, the game developer best known for the series Phylomortis.

Final Verdict: this was one of the first Rpgmaker games I played, and still stands as an impressive work with lots of likeable characters, monsters and quests, some optional and missable. Mapping is not the strong point, probably, but all the rest is absolutely high quality!

Grave Spirit by Zohaib

Within an ancient land, undisturbed for ages, evil resides in a towering fortress... A young wanderer, without a name and past, has been forced to travel to this fortress by a nameless shadowy spirit who controls his every move. Setting out on an uncertain journey, the nameless wanderer has no choice but to succeed in pleasing the spirit's wishes or die trying...

Grave Spirit is an exploration/adventure game where the player, playing as a kobold-like creature has to overcome a series of obastacles: spike traps, mines, birds and so on. The protagonist's health is shown by his eyes. Green is high, yellow is middle, red is low. There are just a couple of boss battles and few dialogues with rare npcs, the rest is solving puzzles and adventuring.

Random Fact: the excellent music is all original, and created by Brandon Abley, the author of Wilfred the Hero and the Tyrant God Saga, that I posted here before.

Final Verdict: this is a really peculiar game, has some good aspects, like the excellent custom arts and the music, but also some not so good parts like the slow walking speed (offset by the dash ability) and dry dialogues that leave a lot of mysteries unsolved. But this is also a game with an amazing atmosphere.

Legend of the Silverstone by MarcL

Legend of the Silverstone is the story of Taka, a young soldier candidate about to complete his training to become a fully fledged soldier of the empire like his older brother: he has some adventures during his training days, but later he has his life turned upside down on the day of his final exam: all happens due to a mysterious silver stone that everyone wants, and after being warned by his brother Riag of an impending danger. Taka regains conciousness many years later in some unknown place. He's been imprisoned and can't remember what happened. After escaping he tries to find a way home, always on the run from his pursuers...

Legend of the Silverstone is a fantasy jrpg with a little bit of adventure, drama, horror and comedy. It's mostly linear but also offers a lot of mini games, quicktime events and a unique quick battle system to make fights easier. The menu is also custom made and allows to save anytime despite the presence of save points. Mapping and graphics are pretty good.

Random Fact: the game was originally released in german, and only later the demo was translated into english. Rather than making a demo for each language, the developer made a single game where the game language can be chosen from the main menu.

Final Verdict: despite some minor flaw and rips from famous games like music from Final Fantasy Tales and facesets and battlers from the Tales game series, the game has its own style and character. It's a pity this is a demo, but it's still pretty long and packed with things to do and places to explore.

Sixdolls by Nogueronic (spanish)

Andrew Salas is a renowned archaeologist hired by Matthew Grant of the  the Golden Chain Mining Company to decipher strange engravings found in one of its tunnels. With the help of Eynar, a hulking Nordic expert in industrial machinery, he soon discovers that these engravings conceal a terrible secret.

Sixdolls isn't an rpg but rather an adventure game with action and survival horror aspects. It has a modern dark setting, and the music and maps really well done. There is a custom made interface and two playable protagonists.

Random Fact: this game earned the 3rd place in 2012 at Hellsoft.net Competición de juegos 2012.

Final Verdict: a demo, but a really good one. I like when developers try to do something different from the usual rpg fantasy adventures, if these are the results!

Complete Chaos by Yeaster

The story begins ten year after the events of Total Chaos: the Celestian Prince defeated the great evil that threatened to seize control over both Celestia and Earth, and the worlds were saved. The  protagonist of this new adventure is Eric Ventura, a cop in Rodger City, sent to protect a jazz singer, Kyon-Lei Kwon from a mysterious stalker, Face. Eric is able to save the jazz singer, and he is in turn saved by a mysterious voice that gives him some new powers.
These will ve necessary to defeat the twelve Demons of Chaos, ancient gods that walk among the humans in disguise. But can Eric amd his friends trust the voice the guides them? And what are its motives?

Complete Chaos is a game very similar to Total Chaos, but there are few additions, for example now dungeons have healing points and enemies are no longer fought in random battles, but they are visible. Moreover Eric Ventura has two sets of skill, depending on the weapon equipped: in fact he can use both handguns and swords. Unlike Total Chaos, the weirdness was toned down, characters are for the most part humans, and all have photorealistic facesets. The game can be played as a stand alone, however there are reference to the previos game, and some party members of Total Chaos appear as npcs.

Random Fact: during the later parts the heroes receive some support from three heroes that you may or many not know: Ronald Johnson from Total Chaos, Marcus Ford from Vanity and Evan Selwyn from Onyx and Onyx 2. These characters already had each one their own adventure, but now they are back here to team up with the new heroes!

Final Verdict: more player-friendly than Total Chaos, and as good as Onyx 2, this was a pretty cool game. It's also the last of the classical Yeaster epic adventurers, later games tried different themes, settings and situations. Still some classic themes like the battle against supernatural opponents in modern/futuristic settings was mantained, but I'll talk about those games in the future.

Total Chaos by Yeaster

Ronald Johnson is a seventeen years old boy that lives in Montane City. Life is quiet and boring until the day he explores an abandoned warehouse together with his best friend Jose Hernandes, and finds a talking dog named Squamus Maxillius. The dog, that says to be from another dimension, tells Ronald that he's the reincarnation of prince Devon Mars, that sacrificed himself to track down a dangerous enemy that escaped to Earth.
At first Ronald is reluctant to follow this talking dog on some quest, but soon when a secret group called Society starts a dark plan to plunge the world into chaos, and Ronald's father seems also to be involved. So Ron and his friends form a ragtag group of heroes determined to stop them.

Total Chaos was a side-project that Yeaster developed between Onyx and Onyx 2: the game was done without much planning but in the end it was completed. And it's really a chaos: the developer mixed various graphic styles, there are real-life pictures, anime-styled portraits and even stylized drawings. This enforces the atmosphere "total chaos" of the title. Surprisingly the game also received a sequel called Complete Chaos, a stand alone story were some of the old characters reappear for brief cameos.

Like the precursor Onyx, this is another game that consists mainly in dungeon exploration (with random encounters), boss battles, few puzzles and many cutscenes. That's nothing new, but the story and characters make this game memorable, with a unique urban fantasy/horror setting inspired to the Shin Megami Tensei series.
Grab Total Chaos here, and remember: there is a guide and a walkthrough for the entire game, including secrets and hidden quests.

Random Fact: Total Chaos includes a cast of twelve playable characters, that is a lot for a Rpgmaker game: they range from a succubus to a summoner, but the most peculiar party member is probably Lindsay Lohan! Yes, the american actress, singer, and songwriter is among the heroes who help Ronald in his quest, and other celebrities like Johnny Depp and Britney Spears also appear in the game as friends or foes of the group.

Final Verdict: This is an ooooold game, I know that, but despite additions that makes it somewhat more detailed than Onyx (the use of battlers, facesets, some secondary quests I do not remember that were present in Onyx and so on) there are other nuisances (the vague item descriptions is one) that makes the gameplay less entertaining and pleasant. And this is really a pity since the story is pretty good, the dialogues (despite the typos) and situations are funny. The cast is varied and well thought out.

Probably many people won't like it for the graphics or the gameplay style, but having played and liked the Onyx series, I admit I had fun. A bit less, but it was still fun!

Mystery Falls by Richterwilker

Mystery Falls starts with the disappearance of a little girl in a small town of the United States, and the game protagonist is the Special Agent David Parker, who was sent by the FBI to investigate the case and try to find out what happened. The story will unfold as the player interacts with the locals, and some mysteries may be solved even before the end of the game, depending on whether the player is taking a linear or explorative route.

In Mystery Falls the gameplay is a mix of exploration and action. The music and scenery are inspired by the Twin Peaks series, while other ideas also come from the games Deadly Premonition and Mizzurna Falls. The game is not an rpg, but an open world exploration and investigation adventure game, with many features like playable arcade videogames, shooting sections, different outfits, a drivable car, and puzzles.

Random Fact: while Mystery Falls is the only game in which we can play as Special Agent David Parker, but this character appears in other games by Richterwilker. Each game is a self contained story and setting, and the next two seem to take place in the same universe after the events of Mystery Falls.

Final Verdict: a really immersive adventure game, a surreal thriller with a really weird story that includes cultists, zombies, aliens, dinosaurs and more. Action parts aren't the best aspects, but for the rest it's an impressive adventure with all custom graphics.
The only bad thing are probably the deadly traffic and arcade games (you can die in both situations), but there isn't anything else worth mentioning since I saw the game as a wild surreal dream, and even if many things look weird (like the behaviour of some of the few named characters) or totally unreal (like the presence of some characters during the final parts, whose roles is never explained at all) ... this fits the overall feeling of a dreamlike adventure.

Achievement unlocked: 100 games showcased!

Welcome back!
Yes, the library has surpassed the 100 games, but it's not time to stop! The one-game-each-day challenge is still going on, and there is enough material to double this number, with some recent games and lots of old ones. I originally took the idea to make this blog after seeing another similar site with rare rpgmaker games, sadly it stopped at the 4th entry. But we won't stop. Stay tuned for more.

Vampiros by Calunio

Alef is a young vampire living the International University of Vampires. Even though he inhabits the top of the vampire society hierarchy, some day he gets fed up with the predictability of his own life and the boredom of his immortality. Defying the rules and conventions of his group, he breaks free from the University and sets on a journey to find out the origin of his kind and the purpose of his own life and identity. He will have to face several enemies, including a recurring rival, but luckily he will also find allies during his adventure.

Vampiros is a short, one hour Rpgmaker 2000 story driven adventure about a young vampire and his three allies that will help him to discover the origins of his race. The game is linear but has some interesting features, for example characters, being vampires, regenerate and are revived immediately after each battle. You can also save anytime, and difficulty is well balanced, with some interesting enemies that can switch form and even resurrect dead allies.

Random Fact: this game was initially made by the developer in portoguese, as a Christmas gift to a friend, and its translation came with some polishing of maps and systems.

Final Verdict: for a little game, this was surprisingly enjoyable, with an interesting and unusual setting and characters. The music is in particular well selected and appropriate.

Cyber Factor by Leric

The game begins in the far future, after Earth was nearly destroyed by Geists, monsters with the ability to delete entire continents from existence. General Magalo orders to Jack the brawler and Saceli Irving the scientist to explore an area where a meteorite fell.

After this prologue the game then moves to Zoei and Caprine, two schoolgirls, both students of the academy under Saceli, moreove Zoei is also Jack's foster daughter: the two discover that the Geist are back. Moreover that life data that fell fro mthe sky and Jack and Saceli found in the prologue somehow assumed human form turning into a boy, Heiro, apparently the only one able to reverse the process of the Geists. Zoei and other friends will accompany him in his mission to restore the data of the deleted world.

Cyber Factor is a techno-fantasy Rpgmaker rpg. Anyway it stands out, because the battle system is pretty good and it's not just about using the most powerful attack or mash the buttons, but what is even better are the puzzles: Heiro can break down physical objects and process them into a raw form of data that can be easily carried. This data is used to traverse obstacles in a variety of ways.

Random Fact: the game allows you to save anywhere which might cause some players to be lax, but here anytime you're approaching potential death a warning appears. This also tells you to prepare yourself for what's up ahead.

Final Verdict: a solid game and a pretty cool rpg. It's a sci-fi twist on Soul Blazer/Act Raiser/Terranigma. Spelling errors aside, it's a pretty great and enjoyable experience.

With Sprinkles by Soihylmz

Vanilla is timid, slow and forgetful and is part of a group of friends called the Ice Cream Kids, that includes him, Cherry, Banana, Strawberry and Chocolate. The friends need some stuff for an event Vanilla forgot about, so they send him on an errand to town. This will lead to a series of little fetch quests meeting pleasant and unpleasant people.

With Sprinkles is a lighthearted 30 minutes interactive visual novel adventure that's little more than a walking simulator: do not expect battles, puzzles or anything complex, probably the most peculiar aspects are the custom graphics and portraits of the colorful characters and world in which our forgetful hero moves. There are lots of tiny details and animations, for a very short story.

Random Fact: With Sprinkles was an originally a webcomic the author planned out back in 2011 (only a single page was made), then in 2014 it became instead this short game about the Ice Cream Kids.

Final Verdict: this is a very minimalistic game. The custom art is simple but nice and colorful, the music is wonderful: especially the town music with its Japanese vocals is extremely uplifting, catching and cute. The only issue are some spelling errors and the unappealing striped dialogue boxes, for the rest it's a pretty nice game.

Die Reise Ins All by Real Troll (german)

Die Reise ins All, or The Journey to Space is a steampunk rpg adventure game influenced by the works of Verne, Doyle, and Wells: it's a journey all around the world of four different characters: Lieutenant von Mackwitz, a strong but dumb prussian soldier, Professor Heisen, a mad scientist, the Frankenstein's monster and Fräulein Eleonore, a smart journalist that opposes the military like Mackwitz and their attempt of using Heisen's inventions as weapons. Anyway they will learn the cooperate when they will have to face a menace from space.

This game is an incredible story driven adventure with an unusual setting where we will travel to Transylvania, Texas, India and many other places to stop a martian invasion. The adventure is lighthearted and linear except for a couple of branching paths. The storyfeatures lots of different characters, both real historical figures and fictional characters, heroes and villains from various famous novels (from Sherlock Holmes to Buffalo Bill Cody, Zorro, Sigmund Freud and Captain Nemo, to name a few). The game is really well done with edits, custom sprites, animated cutscenes, and also some minigames.

Random Fact: at a certain point the Lieutenant von Mackwitz can choose to read a book, and this will be Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. The game will then switch to the story, making Jim Hawking the playable character, then this side-story can be played fully or quitted. However the player may miss a nice part of the game and bonus points if he quits it early or didn't picks it up at all.

Final Verdict: an excellent and unique adventure game, winner of two RPG Atelier awards: first place in 2007 Demo des Jahres - Player's Choice and of the third place in 2012 Goldener Deiji - All-Time Bestes Spiel oder Demo vor Juni 2009.

Kindred Saga by Qheretic

Set in a Dystopian future, a small group of thieves live out their lives in the slums of the city of Terrason, stealing from greedy kingpins and corrupt politicians and avoiding law enforcement. One of the thieves, Slaine, has always felt that there is another "him" out there somewhere in the world. He is haunted by dreams of another persons life, a life filled with murder and destruction. Even worse is the figure in Slaine's dream continually threatens to "consume him".
While pulling a high profile heist, Slaine will find out the true meaning of his dreams, and who the ruthless and mysterious figure in them is.

Kindred Saga is a classic techno-fantasy rpg, released in 2001, it was created by Qheretic that combines the co-op tech abilities of Chrono Trigger, the character field puzzles of Breath of Fire and the dark and dreary setting of Final Fantasy 7's Midgar. Despite being only a demo, it influenced the games of the following Years. The version here includes the walkthrough for the puzzles included.

Random Fact: a battle system demo made by Qheretic and used in Kindred Saga was also uploaded separately with its own story. See below for this extra.

Final Verdict: an excellent game, heavily inspired by Final Fantasy VII, innovative for many aspects like the use of custom menus and side view battles. It also featured some interesting characters. A classic.

EXTRA - Kindred Saga BS: This is a stand alone techdemo of the battle system used in Kindred Saga that has its own story, and was released before the true game. The plot is about Seade, a fighter who wants to become famous by winning the next Terrason Tournament. He will also find other challenges along the way.

A Gate into Eternity by Kokibi

Terra is a world with a dark past, its secrets hidden only in ancient ruins. Here, the young cat-man Lynx searches for a medicine for his mother, but can his elven companion, Schwarzwald, truly be trusted? Meanwhile, elsewhere, young Liena, searching for her uncle Balthasar, makes a gruesome discovery. An ancient temple has been stormed by the servants of a mysterious nobleman, and together with her uncle she has to fight a demoness they summoned. But who is after the temple's secrets? Neither Lynx nor Liena suspects that they will soon become entangled in a web of lies and intrigue.

A Gate into Eternity is a fantasy rpg adventure with two different protagonists that in the first chapter find themselves in trouble with brigands, so they decide to join forces. The game features a unique combat system, very similar to Grandia, and treats the player to full-screen character displays. The game also features custom hand drawn portraits for the major characters. Many players stated that the story is so complex that you might even have to play the game twice to fully grasp everything, in any case the game is a demo do don't expect to reach an epilogue.

Random Fact: the game includes two pre-made saves that the author advises to use after completing this version. These will let the player see a couple of unfinished regions not visitable in the demo, and experience few extra maps and dialogues.

Final Verdict: while I wasn't a fan of the combat system and the custom menus used (I think they are well done, but it takes more time using them than the default menu system), I instead liked the puzzles and mapping. And the story was also pretty interesting and captivating, with some unexpected events and turns.

Razor: Dreams of the Broken Hearted by Grimlock

The game starts with a prologue: Chris is hiding alone, saying he has betrayed his friends, explaining how his boring life was turned upside down and he went from citizen to hunted criminal.
Then the prologue ends and the game starts with a flashback: several days before in a futuristic New York City, where Chris is going to pick up a childhood friend at the airport. From this normal scenes a series of situations and unfortunate events will make him face various enemies, his ex-girlfriend, soldiers and even vampires!

Razor reminds of A Blurred Line for several aspects: the setting is a futuristic cyberpunk world where the protagonist is a normal person that finds out to be hunted by the law, both start with a prologue followed by a flashback, both have adventures set inside a virtual world, and in both there are some choices that may lead to different paths and a different party composition: there are in fact some possible temporary allies and options, however being a demo it's not sure that every option was implemented. The maps are not the strong point and most music consists in midi versions of popular 80s-90s pop and rock songs, but for the rest it's a nice game, that includes few minigames and an interesting story.

Random Fact: the previous version of the game was called Razorblade Symphony and was released one year before this one, I will post here too, since it's basically another version of the same game.

Final Verdict: the game has a pretty interesting story and concept, unfortunately battles are for the most part a chore since enemies are often pretty strong the they outnumber our Chris, that's often alone and has no other attacks besides his rusty knives. Moreover food items can be used to heal only before or after combat, not during it. Anyway for the rest it's a pretty cool demo.
