Jev is a young boy and promising swordsman that dreams to become a hero, so he joins the Filburn army. The Kingdom of Filburn is in fact at war with the Republic of Malrol: the Kingdom has advanced to a technological level that allowed the people of Filburn to fly airships, while the Malrolans were still developing such technologies, however the Emperor intends to acquire the resources of the Malrolans that started to fight back. Jev, meeting Marla the mage, Gervas the artificer and Kupak the Moogle will travel all around the land to bring the war to an end.
FF: Shattered Lands wasn't probably the first Final Fantasy fangame, still it's one of the few that was completed, and the first made by P0sitr0nic Productions. The second is FF: Cry to Heaven, but it's a stand alone story so I'll post it another time. Now, Shattered Lands is a linear fantasy jrpg, and almost a FF-lite since it's a shorter and more compact game compared to the source of inspiration. It's not bad, even if the plot seems a mix of FFVI and FFVII and it's also pretty easy. Try it here:
Random Fact: while the game uses edits of the charsets from FFVI, there are some custom elements. For example Jev fights using the Buster Sword, Cloud Strife's trademark weapon, that appeared only in FFVII. There are also some unused resources, probably cut from the game, like Jev using a snowboard or a trio of agents in black suits that remind of the Turks. These assets weren't used in the final game.
Final Verdict: this game is a homage to the FF series, and has some references to the older games. It's not very long, has only four party members except for the guest characters, anyway it's solid, even if quite simple and easy.
