Rune is a man who has decided to leave his past behind... as best he could. Leaving Galandria behind, he embarks on the journey that took him to places he never seen before. The game starts five years later, when he comes back to Galandria and witnesses a mysterious woman killing an old man. She escapes while Rune is arrested and sentenced to death, but admiral Greywolfe, servant of the Queen Rillana, decides to send him and another prisoner, Malageant the druid, to infiltrate the mercenary army of Neeve, a warlike country, and act as spies to be pardoned. Rune vows to complete this mission.
In the Name of the Rose is a well made classic fantasy rpg game that includes a custom made menu with various options (for example you can choose the dialogue windows style, but is also used to learn skills), characters with very different abilities (Malageant can call the animal spirits and morph into them) and a simple but intriguing plot. The use of avoidable enemies rather than random battles (except on the map, where you can save anytime) was a good choice. Overall a solid fantasy rpg, and one that at the time left a strong impression.
Random Fact: in 2006 Bloodrose took the community by storm with this game, that wasn't bad at all. A prequel was also released during the 2007, called "Until My Finest Hour" that was planned to be tied in with it in a third installment called "Only the Strong". Unfortunately, this third game was cancelled after a long time of no progress being made in its development.
